I keep hearing terms like “F1b” and “multi-gen.” What does all that stuff mean?
It gets confusing, that’s for sure! But it’s pretty simple, actually, once you learn the jargon. This brief explainer should clear things up.
F1
The letter “F” stands for “Filial,” which is a scientific term that basically means the generation where purebreds from different breeds mix. So “F1” is the first mixed generation, in our case, one parent is a Poodle and the other is a Bernese Mountain Dog. A simple 50/50 split.
F1B
The letter “B” stands for “Back,” meaning an F1 doodle is “bred back” with a Poodle. So a 50/50 Bernese/Poodle (F1) is bred with purebred Poodle, resulting in a dog that is 75% poodle and 25% Bernese Mountain Dog.
F1BB
This is the result of an F1B being bred back to a Poodle. So a dog that is 75% Poodle being bred to a pure Poodle, resulting in a dog that’s about 85% poodle. These are our most hypo-allergenic dogs, even more than an F1B. If someone in your family has allergies this may be the mix for you!
Ultra Bernedoodle
The Ultra Bernedoodles go the other way, they feature more Bernese traits than Poodle. Basically, any Bernedoodle that’s >50% Bernese Mountain Dog is considered an “Ultra Bernedoodle.” Usually they are the result of breeding an F1 or F1B back to a Berner. Most of our Ultras have one pure Bernese parent and one Bernedoodle parent. All of our Ultras have the same furnished wavy coat you would see in an F1 Bernedoodle.
Multi-gen
Any Bernedoodle bred to another Bernedoodle is referred to as “multi-gen.” Most of our multi-gen bernedoodles are about 50/50-60/40 Bernese/Poodle. Bernedoodles have a great temperament, great coats and are wonderful family pets. Breeding them to each other reinforces these traits.
